David Tonizza Departs Ferrari Esports

January 3, 2023

Four years, six victories, and one championship later, and David Tonizza and Scuderia Ferrari Velas call time on their partnership.

In social media posts on New Year’s Eve, both the team and driver confirmed that he would not be staying on in Rosso Corsa for 2023.

Tonizza’s finest hours in Ferrari red came of course in 2019, when he clinched the F1 Esports Pro Series drivers’ championship. After building an unassailable lead early in the season – winning three of the first five races that year – he could not be toppled, claiming the championship at the final round of the season in Brazil.

It was also the 2019 season that saw him christened ‘Tonzilla’ after a slip of the tongue during commentary. The dinosaur motif has stayed with Tonizza throughout his F1 Esports tenure, but much like the giants which once roamed the Earth, that era is now at an end.

Other career highlights include his two victories on home soil, first at Monza in 2020, and then again at Imola in 2021. He also holds the unique distinction of being the only driver who will ever take an official F1 win on Vietnam’s Hanoi Street Circuit – a track which was set to feature in the 2020 season, only to be scuppered by the pandemic.

A partial campaign in 2022 saw Tonizza score just 16 points across the season, but ended the season on a high with P5 in Abu Dhabi. While it wasn’t his most sparkling campaign, this champion is sure to feature highly on several teams’ shopping lists for 2023.
