F1 Beyond The Grid Podcast: F1 Esports Special!

March 6, 2020

With the 2020 Formula 1 season just around the corner, it heralds the much-awaited return of the Beyond The Grid podcast. And first up, as a teaser for the podcast’s third season, is a very special F1 Esports edition.

All manner of big names from the world of F1 Esports feature, including Red Bull Racing’s Team Principal Christian Horner, reflecting on his team’s Constructors’ Championship win. F1’s Head of Esports Dr. Julian Tan talks about the progress of the series, from its launch in August 2017, to the present day. Speaking with Tan, it’s clear just how far we’ve come, with all 10 official F1 teams now having real estate on the F1 Esports property ladder. Who knows where to next?

And it wouldn’t be right to have an Esports episode without the top dog, so of course, reigning Drivers’ Champion David Tonizza makes an appearance.

“I was a bit upset when I didn’t get picked so I started to train really hard… This year I got picked by Ferrari, so it’s a relief!”

Maranello-born, with Ferrari red flowing through his veins, Tonzilla’s passion really comes through in the episode. You’d be forgiven for forgetting that the Ferrari Driver Academy Hublot racer is just 18 years old – 17 when the episode was recorded. He now enters 2020 with a huge target on his back.

There are plenty more intriguing characters to listen to, including Alfa Romeo Racing Esports team manager Jamie MacLaurin, Codemasters’ Lee Mather, and a whole host of racers. Two-time champion Brendon Leigh, new race-winner Jarno Opmeer, and the ever-charismatic Enzo Bonito all weigh in on their 2019 seasons as well.

So there you have it! The first ever F1 Esports podcast. And if you like hearing about all things F1 Esports, keep your ear to the ground for more updates on the 2020 Pro Draft as we get them.
