Incredible racing in PS4 Baku Final

May 10, 2018

There was some incredible wheel-to-wheel racing in the PS4 Qualification 2 Race last night. Dominik Hofmann (NTG2011Freak), Michal Šmídl (TRL_MAGICMSM) and Amos Laurito (TGT_Sutil69FU_) all earned a place in the Pro Draft after some great action around the Baku Street Circuit.

The race got off to a frantic start with Šmídl taking the lead into Turn 1 from Hofmann. The biggest gain came from Thomas Scibilia (RC_SpideR_) who worked his way up to 6th from the back row of the grid.

The side-by-side nature of the racing began in earnest at the start of lap 2 as Jarno Opmee (jarnoracing5) and Alex Hanses (SynTeTiC96) battled it out for several corners for 8th spot.

At the front of the pack the top three of Šmídl, Hofmann and Gianfranco Giglioli (ITA-VEN-97) were building a gap for themselves until all three entered the pits at the end of lap 5. Laurito, who was yet to pit, now took the lead. As they left the pits Hofman stole a march on Šmídl while Giglioli rejoined just in front of Guillem Lobato (CosmicGuille).

Laurito made the most of the clear track. Once he had pitted on lap 8 he rejoined wheel-to-wheel with Giglioli in a battle for third place. Laurito’s strategy had him on a brand new set of super soft tyres which helped him to hold onto the move up the inside of Turn 1 to claim 3rd.

Hofmann and Šmídl continued their excellent fight at the front with Šmídl getting close on several occasions but never managing to make the move stick. Drive of the day came from Laurito, who started in 7th to finish on the podium.

Hofmann, Šmídl and Laurito have now qualified for potential selection by one of the real world F1 teams at the forthcoming Pro Draft in July.

There are still plenty of places available in the Draft and the next qualifiers will be determined tonight (Thursday) as the Xbox Qualification 2 race at Baku takes place. You can watch the stream live here from 8pm BST.

There are still two more Qualification rounds of the F1 Esports Series to go. The next round starts tomorrow (Friday) and takes us to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya before the final round of qualifying at Monaco.

To take part you need to register here and play the in-game event in F1 2017 once it goes live. Don’t forget that you could win a spot driving for one of the real F1 teams.
