Joni Tormala stars on first day of Pro Draft Driver Assessments
July 5, 2018
The very best F1 Esports Series drivers from across the world have descended on Silverstone for Pro Draft Driver Assessment week.
Over the course of three days at the UK’s home of motorsport, the top 40 drivers from the F1 Esports Series 2018 qualifying will undergo a series of tests in front of the watchful eyes of the official F1 Esports teams.
Next Monday, on 9 July, the nine teams will make their selections from the pool of drivers as they confirm their line-ups for the F1 Esports Series 2018 Pro Championship.
Wednesday’s opener saw a day of highly competitive racing, between the top 40, and it was Joni Tormala who stole the headlines. The Finnish driver stormed to victory in his heat and his semi-final, before completing the full set by winning the final. Tormala finished 3.7 seconds ahead of Cem Bolukbasi, with Tino Naukkarinen a further half a second behind in P3.
Tormala, who endured a disappointing time at the 2017 F1 Esports Series Grand Final in Abu Dhabi, when he had been considered one of the front-runners, was delighted with his performance.
“I came here to perform and with something to prove after what happened in Abu Dhabi so I am so pleased,” he said.
“It’s so awesome being here at Silverstone and so exciting to be part of the Pro Draft process next week. I hope I have done enough to impress the teams.”
On Thursday, the Pro Driver Assessment week changes focus slightly to fitness, with reaction tests and overall fitness tests on the agenda for the drivers. Then, on Friday, the final day involves a karting session, where the teams will get one final look at their prospective drivers before the all-important selection process on Monday evening at the inaugural F1 Esports Series Pro Draft.
