Virtual Grand Prix Series Returns for 2021!

January 14, 2021

The F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix series makes its return on Sunday January 31! As the worldwide situation continues to keep people indoors and the bleak midwinter leaves F1 fans deprived of live F1 action, the Virtual Grand Prix pops back onto the horizon.

When times were tough, everyone went virtual. Zoom calls, online groceries and digital racing were the orders of the day, and while the first two remain fixtures in our lives, the latter is making a comeback. Three Virtual Grands Prix will help to bridge the gap between the start of the year and the beginning of the 2021 F1 season.

Here’s how it will work for this year.

FORMAT CHANGES

The VGPs will run slightly different this year. A five-lap Sprint Race, contested by the stars of the F1 Esports Series will preface the race, acting as a ‘qualifying race’ of sorts for the Feature Race. There, teams will field their elite duo of racing drivers, sports stars, celebrities and the like.

The Feature Race will be a 50% distance affair, with the grid order determined by results in the sprint race.

RACING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

The ten teams will battle it out for points, and will be tracked over a three-race championship, with a charity prize fund to be donated to their nominated charities by Formula 1 dependent on their finishing position.

Each of the ten teams will nominate a charity to receive donation from Formula 1 on their behalf, with all drivers playing an important part securing the best possible donation for their team’s charity.

SOUNDS GREAT… WHEN DO WE RACE?

The three-race series will begin on Sunday, January 31 for a race around the Red Bull Ring in Austria. Just one week later, February 7 will see the series visit Silverstone in Great Britain, before a finale of sorts at Interlagos in Brazil one week later on Valentine’s Day, February 14.

You can catch all this action live across F1’s social channels as per usual, on YouTube, Twitch, Facebook and on TV in selected territories.

Keep your eyes peeled on social as we announce the drivers!
