Simon Weigang Joins Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Esports for 2021

March 16, 2021

Germany’s Simon Weigang joins the ranks of Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN F1 Esports Team for 2021! After two seasons in the Pro Series with Renault Vitality and Haas, the German racer moves over to Alfa for his third season.

The move is the latest in the merry-go-round of F1 Esports racers in the early part of 2021, with two-time champion Brendon Leigh moving to Ferrari Driver Academy to form a super-team with 2019 winner David Tonizza. This in turn led reigning champion Jarno Opmeer to move from Alfa to Mercedes, where he will be joined by former McLaren racer Dani Moreno.

Weigang, then, steps into an Alfa Romeo team with its team leader moving on to pastures new, but with teams eligible to sign drivers up until June in 2021, you can bet he won’t be alone for long.

Weigang first popped up in the Pro Series in 2019, having been selected by Renault Vitality at that year’s Pro Draft. An excited shuffle of the legs suggested that the energetic racer was up for the challenge and ready to prove his mettle, and he scored three times in his four-race run that year, including a fine P7 finish in Brazil

For 2020, he moved to Haas, taking on the role of de facto team leader alongside Cedric Thome and Floris Wijers. While his team mates shared the other seat, scoring five points, Weigang ran every singe race, and scored 34, with a best finish of P4 in Great Britain.

Who will join him at Alfa Romeo? The 2021 F1 Esports Pro Exhibition is on the horizon, and will give the 10 official F1 Esports teams a pool of the fastest sim racers in the world to complete their line-ups for the season! This special event takes place in May, however it’s not the only route for teams to sign drivers this year. The window for signing drivers stretches until June, so keep your eyes on social for more signings and news as we get them.
